At the pharmacy

In Belgium, medicines are almost exclusively sold in pharmacies.

Non-prescription over-the-counter medicines are not refunded. You can save up to 40 % by asking your pharmacist for the most affordable product.

Prescription medicines are reimbursed fully or partly.

  1. Bring your prescription and your ID card to the pharmacy. If you don’t have an electronic ID, you can bring an ISI+ card, the social security card for kids under 12 and people who cannot receive an official ID, such as cross-border workers.
  2. You pay copay at the pharmacy.
  3. Your health insurance fund pays the rest directly to the pharmacist.

If you have no electronic ID or ISI+ card, bring your EHIC card. You will have to pay the full price at the pharmacy and request a reimbursement from your health insurance fund.
